Artificial Intelligence in Dentistry: From Core Concepts to Prosthodontic Applications

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming society and has potential to reshape dentistry, provided that we understand its capabilities, risks, and limitations. This lecture will introduce core AI concepts relevant to dental practice, spanning large language models, computer vision, and prediction modeling. These technologies can support clinical decision making and automation of routine tasks, increasing work efficiency. A central theme will be critical appraisal: data quality and bias, generalizability, uncertainty, automation bias, privacy and security, as well as regulatory and medico-legal implications. Building on these foundations, we will explore how AI can be implemented within prosthodontic workflows and where added value is realistic. By presenting available evidence, this lecture aims to support responsible and efficient adoption of AI in prosthodontics without compromising safety, transparency, or trust.
