Christel Larsson is Associate professor and Head of the Department of Prosthodontics at Malmö university. She also holds a position as Visiting Associate Professor at Riga Stradiņš University in Riga, Latvia.
Dr. Larsson graduated from Lund University in 1996 and received her Specialist degree in Prosthodontics in 2004. Dr. Larsson was a member of one of the pioneering research groups that investigated zirconia as a material for prosthetic restorations. Insights gained during this early phase have guided her continued investigations of ceramic materials.
Her research ranges from pre-clinical studies to practical implementation including patient reported outcomes, bridging the gap between the laboratory and the clinic. Dr. Larsson currently leads a research team of four PhD candidates, one postdoctoral researcher, and several master’s students. The current main focus is a multicenter interdisciplinary project evaluating associations between patient related factors and technical complications following implant treatment. The overarching aim is to identify patient-specific risk factors to enable precision treatment planning including materials choice. In addition to her own research activities, she serves as a member of scientific committees, the European Association for Osseointegration (EAO), and is a member of the editorial boards of four international peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Materials choice for successful outcome
The development of ceramic materials have challenged the previous gold standard for prosthetic restorations, metal-ceramics. But can we use ceramic alternatives in all situations and expect similar outcomes?
This lecture will explore the road towards the material options we have today and the lessons learned along the way – lessons that may help us avoid future mistakes. We will explore the material properties that present specific opportunities and challenges. We will compare clinical outcome and include the patient’s perspective. Finally, we will take a peek into the future to discuss what tools we may have to identify and manage risk factors.
